Chuchotage (Whispered Interpreting)

While simultaneous interpreting for larger groups of people requires the use of technical equipment, simultaneous interpreting for a smaller group can sometimes be done without any special technical support. In this case, we speak of so-called chuchotage. With its large pool of interpreters for a variety of languages throughout Austria and Germany, the Translation Agency Vienna | Connect Translations Austria GmbH will be happy to organise chuchotage interpreters for your next event.

Chuchotage – fields of employment and work routine

When only a small number of guests who are not proficient in the event language are invited to a large monolingual event, investing in a fully equipped interpreting booth is not really worth it. Instead, this is where chuchotage is sometimes used. The interpreters whisper their interpretation of the lecture or speech (in real time) to an audience of no more than one or two people.

Settings in which whispered interpreting is used include:

  • Business lunches with a few foreign business partners
  • Negotiations with longer speeches
  • Conversation rounds with only one or two participants who cannot follow the conversation in the majority language
  • Tours or visits

Although chuchotage is very suitable for some settings and situations, it has a number of decisive disadvantages compared to simultaneous interpreting with booths. On the one hand, even the slightest murmur can be heard and therefore distract the interpreter, and on the other hand, whispering is vocally far more strenuous for the interpreter than speaking aloud. Another problem event managers often face is the positioning of the interpreters and their addressees in the room, as the interpreter must of course be able to closely follow the speech, but the other participants in the event should not be disturbed by the interpretation.

In some exceptions, if more than three people are to benefit from the interpretation for example, then chuchotage may also make use of technical equipment. With the help of the so-called tour guide systems sets, which contain a headset with microphone as well as several receiving devices, chuchotage can be made accessible to a larger group of recipients.

Tour guide system set

In addition to chuchotage, the Translation Agency Vienna | Connect Translations Austria GmbH is also happy to provide tour guide system sets.

Portable tour guide systems are not only suitable as such in companies or at trade fairs. Portable tour guide systems are sometimes also used for interpreting. Tour guide system sets are a cost-effective solution for shorter events with few participants or for events where the installation of a soundproof interpreting booth is not possible due to a lack of space.
